A man raised an alarm regarding a canal in Sangotedo, Lagos State, being filled with sand by a real estate firm claiming to have state government approval. This act, often cited as contributing to environmental risks and reduced flood water absorption, follows recent crackdowns by the state government on illegal land reclamation and development activities. 

Independent experts and environmentalists warn that dredging and filling wetlands/canals, such as in the Lekki-Sangotedo axis, destroys natural water buffers, significantly increasing flood risks and environmental damage.

The Lagos State government has previously stated a "zero tolerance" stance against illegal land filling and unauthorized sand mining, vowing to prosecute violators of environmental laws.

The state has warned developers that modifying or blocking drainage channels is illegal, urging developers and citizens to report such illegal acts. While developers sometimes claim government backing, the state frequently announces enforcement actions, including the seizure of equipment and shutdown of illegal operations.
